Past the midway point of the season and with the 2018 MLB trade deadline come and gone, several former Cards found themselves on the move as a result of all the trades made by major league clubs.

Despite having another solid season of power hitting, the Cincinnati Reds decided to strike while the iron was hot and traded 2016 All Star and former UofL outfielder Adam Duvall to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for 3 prospects. While he hadn’t boasted a very impressive batting average in his 2018 campaign (.205), he took advantage of the balls he did put in play and has launched 15 home runs and driven in 61 RBIs so far in 2018. Also on the move was former UofL pitcher Josh Rogers, who was traded from the New York Yankees’ farm system to the Baltimore Orioles’ system as a part of the trade for All Star closer Zach Britton. In his 20 starts this season, he sports a 3.71 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 116.1 innings with a strikeout to walk ratio of 85 to 32.

On top of former Cards finding brand new homes because of the trade deadline, a few others found themselves getting called up and finding new homes of their own. With a strikeout to walk ratio of almost 2 to 1 and an ERA of 3.96 over 19 starts, starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser is now one step away from The Show after being called up to Detroit’s AAA affiliate Toledo Mud Hens. Third baseman Blake Tiberi found himself climbing up the ladder of the New York Mets’ system, being called up to the Class A-Advanced affiliate St. Lucie Mets, and pitcher Riley Thompson was finally assigned to the Chicago Cubs’ Class A-Short Season affiliate Eugene Emeralds after signing to a contract on 6/27.

Unfortunately with all the player movement in the last month, a few players were bound to be left on the outside looking in. The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres continue to bounce pitchers Matt Koch and Kyle McGrath respectively back and forth in between MLB and AAA, and former UofL pitcher Jeff Thompson’s road to the show came to an abrupt end, as he was released on July 21st.
