Bret Calhoun has been winning Graded Stakes since 2003 and bagged his 1st Grade I in 2010 in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint with Dubai Majesty. The Texas native was really focused in Louisiana and Texas early in his career but now routinely has runners at Churchill Downs each meet. This will be Calhoun’s 1st Derby starter, but racing fans know him for Finley’sluckycharm, Patrona Margarita and others.
Allied Racing Stable is a Madisonville, KY operation of Chester Thomas who has won a few riding titles at Ellis Park. By My Standards Louisiana Derby victory is Allied’s 1st ever Graded Stakes win but Allied has been around for just 3 years. Quite the achievement in such a short period of time.
Why I Like By My Standards/ Why I Don’t Like By My Standards
By My Standards need 4 tries to break his maiden and has shown steady improvement in the speed figures (89,85,91,93,96). But I’m just not sure what to make of that Louisiana Derby where BMS won at 22:1. War of Will was the clear favorite in that race and was “off” and didn’t look himself that day. But to By My Standard’s credit…. he took advantage.
This may be the case of a colt growing into his own at the right time. The colt was purchased for $150,000 and does share bloodlines with Into Mischief. I also do like that Gabriel Saez is retaining the mount and has ridden BMS in all 5 of his starts thus far.
My Final Take on By My Standards
I’ll be fading By My Standards in the 145th Running of the Roses. But we’ve seen 1st time connections with questionable Derby preps pull off the upset. My decision to leave BMS off the “Can Win” the Kentucky Derby list is really a testament to the rest of the field and is really made more difficult because By My Standards is an absolute stunning horse in person.
