Junior College running back Octavius Matthews announced his commitment today to the University of Louisville. The 6’1″, 200lb running back said he has been recruited by Coach Petrino since he was in high school and credits both the coaching staff and players in factoring into his decision. Matthews had 808 yards on 86 carries while scoring 4 touchdowns last year for Itawamba Community College. He also added 13 receptions for 147 yards and 2 TD’s.

Analysis:
Matthews is best summarized as this: He is a 1 cut back that has breakaway speed. He is different type of back than any on the current UofL roster in that what he lacks in power he makes up for in speed. Matthews appears to have good vision, being patient behind the line of scrimmage before making a cut and getting north and south, which he does in a hurry. At 6’1″ he has the size and frame to add a few more pounds (currently at 200lbs) which could make him harder to bring down, something I anticipate the staff working to do.
