University of Louisville junior Brendan McKay was named Monday as ACC Pitcher of the Week setting the all-time ACC career record for weekly recognition with his seventh honor.
The ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. The seven career weekly awards for McKay (six Pitcher of the Week honors and one Player of the Week award) surpassed the previous record of six held by Clemson’s Kris Benson, Florida State’s J.D. Drew, and Paul Wilson, and NC State’s Terry Harvey. Wake Forest’s Gavin Sheets earned this week’s ACC Player of the Week honor.
McKay threw eight scoreless innings allowing only an infield single with eight strikeouts to lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 series-opening victory at Notre Dame last Friday night. The lefthander from Darlington, Pennsylvania, improved to 7-3 on the season and 28-10 in his collegiate career while leading Louisville to its ninth shutout of the season.
This week’s outing marked the second time in four starts McKay has allowed just one hit in eight shutout innings after achieving the feat in a victory at Georgia Tech on April 13. Through 11 starts and 75.0 innings pitched this season, McKay has a 1.92 ERA with 103 strikeouts and opposing batters are hitting just .160 overall against him.
Up next, No. 2 Louisville returns home to host Vanderbilt in the annual Battle of the Barrel on Tuesday at 6 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
