The No. 3 Louisville baseball team will face a ranked opponent for the 17th time in 37 games this season as No. 12 Kentucky visits Jim Patterson Stadium on Tuesday at 6 p.m., ET for the finale of the annual Battle of the Bluegrass two-game series. Ranked No. 3 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll, Louisville went 5-0 last week highlighted by midweek wins over Western Kentucky and Kentucky as well as a weekend series sweep of No. 16 Clemson. After six weeks of ACC action, the Cardinals are atop the Atlantic Division with a 13-5 record. On the mound, Louisville has seven shutouts (No. 3 nationally) while allowing two or fewer earned runs in 20 of its 36 outings. Entering the week, the pitching staff is ranked fourth in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings at 6.88 and 14th in ERA at 2.92. Offensively, the Cardinals are second nationally with a .335 team batting average, third in on-base percentage at .423 and fourth in scoring at 8.7 runs per game.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Kentucky, ranked as highly as 12th in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll, enters the week at 23-12 overall and 9-6 in the SEC after losing two of three at Vanderbilt last weekend. Under eighth year head coach Gary Henderson, the Wildcats were 30-25 last season and finished fourth in the SEC East with a 14-15 record.
The Cardinals trail 61-39-1 in the all-time series with Kentucky, which dates back to 1925. Louisville is 11-9 against the Wildcats under head coach Dan McDonnell and has won four straight in the series, including a 9-6 victory in Lexington last Wednesday night. Last season, Louisville earned a 2-1 walk-off win in 10 innings at Jim Patterson Stadium and won a 5-2 decision on the road in Lexington.
