The University of Louisville baseball team lost its opening game of the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship 8-5 to Miami on Tuesday at Truist Field in Charlotte.

Louisville (32-23) will wrap up pool play on Friday at 3 p.m. ET against Clemson, however the Cardinals cannot advance to the semifinal round.

Miami (25-29) jumped on the Cardinals early Tuesday, taking a 3-0 lead just three batters into the game. Consecutive singles were followed by an opposite-field three-run homer to put the Hurricanes in front.

The Cardinals plated their first run in the third, as Dylan Hoy doubled into the left field corner to score JT Benson from first.

Benson then made it a one-run game two innings later, hitting his eighth homer of the season into the left-centerfield seats.

However, Miami responded with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away.

Zion Rose hit Louisville’s second home run of the day in the sixth, tucking one over the wall in right for his fifth of the year.

The Cardinals tried to rally down five in the final frame. Luke Napleton launched a pinch-hit solo shot to left and Rose notched a run-scoring double, however the tying run was left in the on deck circle when the final out of the game was recorded.

Evan Webster (5-3) allowed the three runs in the first inning, his only inning of work. Patrick Forbes worked a career-long five innings, giving up two runs and striking out five. Kaleb Corbett struck out four in two shutout innings.

The top three hitters in Louisville’s order combined for eight of the 11 hits on the day. Benson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, reaching base five times while Rose added three hits of his own.
