Dear CardNation: Almost 10 years ago, the Louisville Cardinal Community came together at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta or huddled around televisions with family and friends, to cheer on our Men’s Basketball team as it completed a season for the ages. Like many of you, I remember everything about that season—the incredible ride we all went on together. The play of Luke, Russ, Peyton and their teammates; the heartbreak and the inspiration from Kevin; and the looks on our student-athletes faces soaking in all that they had accomplished. That Monday night was an incredible end to a season that included a share of the Big East regular season title and the Big East Tournament championship. On February 18, I hope you will join us as we come together at the KFC Yum! Center to recognize the amazing accomplishments of this legendary Cardinals team. A large majority of the players will be in attendance so that we can celebrate the countless memories they provided for each of us. As part of that recognition, you will notice something new hanging from the rafters: a banner that reads “2013 Final Coaches Poll #1.” After productive communication with the NCAA staff and Committee on Infractions, we can recognize our former student-athletes in this way, and we’re grateful to the NCAA for their guidance. Our former Cardinals and our devoted fans deserve to have our special season recognized in some manner in our home arena. It remains a fact that this team had a remarkable season that none of us will ever forget. Thank you for your continued support of the University of Louisville and I look forward to seeing you at a game in the days ahead! Sincerely, Josh Heird Athletic Director |
