After opening the 2014 season with a 1-0 triumph over then-No. 2 Maryland on Friday night, the Louisville men’s soccer team made a big move in the national rankings on Tuesday replacing the Terrapins as the No. 2 ranked team in this week’s NSCAA Top 25.

The Cardinals (1-0) gained 12 positions in the coaches poll after being ranked 14th in the NSCAA preseason poll. Louisville also moved from No. 9 to No. 5 in this week’s Soccer America Top 25 released on Tuesday.

The No. 2 national ranking is the highest for Louisville since opening the 2011 season ranked No. 1. The Cardinals were also ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2010 before closing the season as NCAA runner-up after reaching the College Cup title game.

Louisville is among five ACC schools in this week’s NSCAA poll and six conference teams in the latest Soccer America poll. ACC clubs hold down three of the top five positions in each of the two national polls.

The No. 2 Cardinals will return to action against Cornell on Friday at 8:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The men’s match will follow the Louisville women’s soccer team’s home contest against Kentucky (6 p.m.) and fans are encouraged to wear red for the Red Out at Lynn Stadium.
