Monday’s practice was the 1st of the season with the entire roster together on one field. Well, except for Ja’Quay Savage, Alphonso Carter, Chucky Williams, and Richard Benjamin. It’s hard to tell whether or not anyone was held out for anything serious, but the Cards also saw WR Jamari Staples leave Monday’s practice after a pass break-up by Josh Harvey-Clemons. Staples appears to irritate his knee but it is impossible to really know the extent of his injury or if he was held out as a precaution.

-Devonte Fields got plenty of reps with the 1s and 2s. When given the opportunity he shined. Fields was almost impossible for Louisville to block from both the defensive end and outside linebacker position.

-The offensive line was the same today as it has been: Tackles were Kelby Johnson & Aaron Epps, Guards were Kiola Mahoni and Khalil Hunter, and the Center was Pedro Sibiea.

-It’s clear that the defense is still the top unit. The #1 Defense rarely has a break and onlookers are only left to wonder just how good they’ll be when unleashed to bring ball carriers to the ground. It’s difficult to single out anyone here because the group is just playing so well….but I am going to with Trumaine Washington after he had a fabulous day after practicing the first 4 days with the newcomers.

-Louisville’s quarterbacks did throw some really nice balls today. Today was Will Gardner’s day with the #1 group and has really been sharp even with most of his (projected) top targets out.

-One player that really stood out was Traveon Samuel. Samuel made several fantastic plays on the day. Emonne Spence got a great deal of work with the top unit today and it is clear that Spence has a great deal of talent but playing against the veterans there is a noticeable learning curve.

-That learning curve is also present for the much hyped Lamar Jackson. Jackson needs reps and he got some today and shows flashes of a bright future. However, it’s clear that Lamar has a lot of work to do.

Louisville will hit the field for one last open practice of the preseason at 3:50.
