Master Fencer accepted an invitation to participate in the Run for the Roses after finishing 2nd & 4th in two of the Road to the Kentucky Derby races (Fukuryu Stakes and the Hyacinth Stakes).

Master Fencer’s sire Just a Way won 3 Grade I races and his dam was purchased at Keeneland in 2005. Master Fencer will be the 1st Japanese bred to run in the Kentucky Derby.

Julien Leparoux is a 35 year old French rider who regularly rides at Churchill Downs. Julien rode Union Rags in the 2012 Kentucky Derby and has won 7 Breeders’ Cup races.

Why I Like Master Fencer / Why I Don’t Like Master Fencer

Honestly its hard to really know what we have here. 2nd and 4th in Road to the Kentucky Derby races in Japan don’t exactly inspire confidence going into this elite race. But it’s an unknown and it would be unfair to write the horse off completely not exactly knowing what we are dealing with here.

My Take on Master Fencer

I’m not sure how to use Master Fencer at all. Going by history the two other Japanese-based horses failed to hit the board. Master Fencer is well-bred but I’m willing to let the horse beat me than to reach and try to find a place for him while betting.
