Louisville men’s basketball begins play in the 2023 New York Life ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament as the No. 15 seed on Tuesday, when it will face 10th-seeded Boston College at 4:30 p.m. ET in Greensboro, N.C. The game will air on ACC Network.

The Cardinals finished the regular season Saturday with a 75-60 loss at No. 13/12 Virginia. Boston College lost 73-65 at home to Georgia Tech on Saturday in its season finale.

Louisville is 10-5 all-time against the Eagles, including a 75-65 loss in Chestnut Hill on Jan. 25. The Cardinals have won nine of the last 11 matchups. The teams have never met in the ACC Tournament.

• Since joining Conference USA in 1995-96, Louisville is 17-8 in its first conference tournament game across C-USA, the Big East, the American and the ACC. The Cardinals are 5-2 in first-round conference tournament games since 1996. They’ve only played one first-round game in the ACC Tournament, which they won last year against Georgia Tech. Louisville is 3-6 overall in the ACC Tournament since joining the league.

• Senior guard El Ellis is averaging 20.9 points per game over the last seven games while shooting 48% from the field, 35% from 3 and 87% from the free-throw line. After having a positive or even assist-to-turnover ratio just three times in the first nine games of the season, Ellis has been positive or even in 17 of the last 22 games. In his last 17 games since 2023 began, he has 77 assists against just 52 turnovers.

• Over the last six games, junior forward JJ Traynor is averaging 11.3 points and 5.8 rebounds while making 8 of 14 shots from 3-point range. Traynor has made more than three times as many 3s this season (22) as he did in his first two seasons combined (7). He scored a career-high 16 points in back-to-back games against Clemson and Duke.

• Redshirt freshman guard/forward Mike James ranks fourth in the ACC among freshmen in scoring at 10.1 points per game. Over the last 17 games, James is averaging 12.8 points and has increased his volume to 9.3 shots per game.

• Mike James tied his career high with 24 points at Virginia on March 4. He’s the first Cardinal to score at least 24 points multiple times in their rookie season since Francisco Garcia did against Cincinnati and Marquette in 2002-03.

• Louisville started the game at Duke on Feb. 20 with an 18-9 lead, marking the eighth loss for the Cardinals this season in which they’ve led by at least eight points at one time, including six times in ACC play.   

• Louisville had 13 or fewer turnovers just four times in the first 20 games of the season. The Cardinals have now had 13 or fewer turnovers in eight of the last 11 games. On the other side of the ball, Louisville is averaging 7.0 3-point makes per game in the last 12 games after averaging just 5.9 made 3s across the first 19 games.

Louisville men’s basketball led Boston College for more than 24 minutes, but turnovers again proved costly in a 75-65 road defeat.

The Cardinals committed 19 turnovers which led to 18 Boston College points, allowing what was at one point a 12-point advantage in the first half slip away.

Louisville shot 53.1% for the game and 60% in the first half, while also knocking down 9 of 18 3-pointers.

But the Eagles caught fire after the break, making 7 of 11 long-range attempts in the second half, as well as 13 of 15 free throws. They made 17 of 21 overall from the stripe.

Quinten Post paced Boston College with 22 points and six rebounds.

EL Ellis led Louisville with 17 points and five assists, while Jae’Lyn Withers contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.

Mike James finished with 15 points, and Sydney Curry found double digits with 10 points.
