Cardinal fans have been talking a lot about two players the last few months.  Columbus, GA’s Jawon Pass and Ft. Lauderdale, FL’s (formerly of PA) Maverick Rowan.  We don’t do a lot of recruiting stories at TheCrunchZone.com, but the buzz on these two players in two different sports really is at a level where we just have to address it.  Here’s the breakdown for each:

Jawon Pass

The nation’s #2 dual threat QB (he is ranked 2-4 on various sites) is set to announce his decision next week on July 16th.  Nicknamed “Puma”, the Cards landed Jawon’s brother Khane in the 2015 class this past February.  Some analysts believe that Khane is Louisville’s best prospect from the 2015 class and was rated the #39 best safety prospect nationally. If his brother Jawon joins the Cards the Pass Brothers could be key cornerstone pieces to Bobby Petrino’s early rosters.

“Puma” has announced that he is down to Alabama, Auburn, and Louisville.  All 3 schools have QB commitments already but the 6’5, 220 signal caller is unfazed by the competition at all schools.  The Courier-Journal’s Steve Jones recently did a story on Jawon Pass and interviewed his mother.   Pass is currently in Oregon participating at the Elite 11 QB Camp and “The Opening” camp, both of which are very prestigious football camps.

In reading Steve Jones’ interview it seems as if Auburn has conceded to let Alabama and Louisville battle it out.  Jawon was 165-246 (67%) for 2197 yards and 23 Touchdowns with just 2 Interceptions as a junior QB in a talent rich area.  Teddy Bridgewater was 247sports.com’s #5 dual threat QB in 2011, Reggie Bonnafon was the #10 dual threat QB in 2014, and Lamar Jackson was #13 in the 2015 class.  The Carver HS prospect currently has offers from: Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, North Carolina, Clemson, Indiana, LSU, Miami, Miss St, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, and Florida.

My Prediction:  I think on July 16th Jawon Pass pledges to the Cards.

Maverick Rowan

We last updated readers on Maverick Rowan’s status on June 22nd.  At that time, it appeared that Louisville was in the driver’s seat to land a reclassified Rowan into the 2015 class with Rick Pitino’s last scholarship.  Almost immediately after publishing that report, word came down that Maverick and his father would be visiting St. John’s and that Louisville and Rowan had ‘cooled’.

In the past week, however, it appears that Louisville is back in the mix and ‘gaining ground’.  With several analysts at the Nike Peach Jam starting to project Maverick Rowan will be a Card when he announces.  Rowan told InsideTheVille’s Mike Hughes that he is “running out of time” and that a decision could come next week, if not sooner.”

Maverick has visited Louisville several times including with incoming freshman Ryan McMahon for Louisville’s Senior Night vs. Virginia and witnessed the Mangok Mathiang game-winner.  Rowan was originally committed Pittsburgh before his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale from Pennsylvania.

Rowan is a 4-star wing player that can play both Shooting Guard and Small Forward at 6’5.  Maverick has a reliable shot, but also is crafty in getting into the lane and creating shots around the rim. Currently Maverick hold offers from Louisville, St. John’s, NC State, WVU, Florida, Florida State, Iowa State, North Carolina, Pitt, UCLA, Virginia, and Wisconsin.  It appears that Louisvlle, NC State, and St. John’s are the finalists for Rowan’s services and that commitment could come at anytime.

My Prediction: Rowan is correct that he is out of time and despite his back and forth recruitment I think when he makes his decision in the next few days (or hours) that he’ll be a Cardinal.
