With the 1088th pick in the 36th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, the Tampa Bay Rays have selected University of Louisville junior right-handed pitcher Shay Smiddy.
One of the most reliable arms out of the bullpen, Smiddy has been borderline unhittable over the course of the season in the set up role. His opponents’ batting average of .139 is good for the best on the pitching staff, and allowed a run in just 5 of his 19 pitching appearances. One of the better pitchers away from Jim Patterson Stadium, his ERA of 2.19 when not pitching at 3rd & Central is third best on the team.
