Summertime around the University of Louisville football program is typically a quiet period, but first-year head coach Scott Satterfield has been making a lot of noise in recent weeks.

Satterfield and his staff have scoured the country searching for talent for the 2019 season and beyond, and its paid off with a lot of momentum in securing talent.

The staff has added a couple of new members to the 2019 class through the junior college and graduate transfer route, but are also building an impressive recruiting class with recent commitments.

“Recruiting in this day and age never stops,” Satterfield said. “You’re going to recruit all year round. Whether it be grad transfers, regular transfers, high school players – we have people on campus every day that we can.

“You’re always going to be recruiting. We always try to address the needs that we have, and we have several needs still, in trying to upgrade positions.”

The Cardinals’ staff has spent the last few weeks touring the country as a staff visiting numerous camps and trying to sell the UofL program, and in the last couple of weeks, recruits are beginning to pay attention.

“It speaks volumes about our staff and the amount of things that they are putting into this and how hard they’re working,” Satterfield said. “I feel like we have really put a lot time work, effort and time into this. We’re here most weekends hosting kids and families and really trying to sell our program and what we can do in the future.”

Since coming on board, Satterfield and his staff has won over the current team with their attitude and demeanor, which has also been noticeable by recruits and their families.

While some may see it as a façade, Satterfield stressed that what you see is what you get.

“We are who are,” Satterfield said. “I think we’re getting that across to the moms, dads and the kids themselves, and they want to be a part of that and they’re going to have fun doing it.”

In his first six months on the job, Satterfield has worked hard to improve all facets of the UofL of the program, but most importantly they have cultivated relationships over a short period of time.

“We built great relationships this spring and now we’re seeing the fruit of that labor come to pass with some of these guys that are wanting to be part of this team,” Satterfield said. “I think we’re going to continue to see that. I think we’ll have some more in the next few days.”

After being on the road for the last couple of weeks, Satterfield had an opportunity to see his team run for the first time in recent weeks and came away impressed with their development, both physically and mentally.

“I was able to watch the team run for the first time the other day and I was proud of their development,” Satterfield said. “The guys have come a long way. We are running so much better as a field team. You see that their bodies are changing in the weight room and it translates to running faster on the field.”

The Cardinals still have about seven weeks left in the summer program before they report to camp on August 3, so the team has a lot of room to grow.

“I’m very proud of them,” Satterfield said. “They’ve worked extremely hard in the weight room. I’ve been pleased with Jawon Pass, who has become more of a vocal leader. We’ve had several guys who have lost weight and a lot of guys who have gotten stronger. It’s been fun to track their progress.”
