Louisville Right-Handed Pitcher Kyle Funkhouser should hear his name called during tonight’s Major League Baseball Draft 1st Round tonight.  The Draft begins at 7:00 p.m. and the MLB Network and will feature all of the selections in the 1st round including compensatory selections in the 1st round.  The start time is the same starting time as Louisville’s deciding Game 3 of its Super Regional vs. Cal State Fullerton tonight at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The only Cardinal that is expected to be selected in the 1st round tonight is Kyle Funkhouser (Cal State Fullerton’s Thomas Eshelman is also expected to hear his name called in the 1st round tonight also).  According to mock drafts Funkhouser is expected to go anywhere from #10-#20 tonight.

Funkhouser has posted two consecutive 100+ strikeout seasons the last two years for the Cards and has been the Cardinal ACE and Friday night starter over the past two seasons.  The Cards are vying for their 3rd consecutive trip to Omaha for the College World Series tonight and also broke the single season record for most wins in an ACC season this year.

The Signing Bonus slots for the 1st Ten Rounds of the MLB Draft are mostly determined (they are guidelines for clubs, not guarantees) and range from $8.6M for the #1 overall selection to $1.47M for the last pick in the 1st round.  Selections #10-#20 where Funkhouser is expected to be selected ranges from $3.23M to $2.21M.   That’s quite a range and each pick AFTER 10 will reduce by about $100K signing bonus per selection.

Which club selects Funkhouser, however, is perhaps more important than what # selection Kyle is.  The organization that selects him will go a long way in determining “Funk’s” development and how he progresses eventually to a big league club.  There is no doubt that Funk will become a millionaire tonight, but how his club cultivates his mid-90s arm will determine if Kyle Funkhouser remains a millionaire over the course of his lifetime with a 2nd, 3rd, and perhaps even a 4th contract at the big-league level.
