** Louisville lost a commitment this weekend in 3* and #1 rated JUCO running back Octavius Matthews. Immediately after announcing his decommitment Matthews announced his commitment to Auburn. I had reported just the night before directly from Matthews that UofL was still his #1 school and the Auburn offer didn’t change his commitment to Louisville, obviously that changed very quickly. On one hand, Louisville loses a commitment from a very talented running back but on the other Louisville is in a great position with several very talented high school backs in the 2017 class.

** Speaking of running backs, let’s breakdown briefly a few of the main recruits Louisville is after:

Jamari Peacock: Visited Louisville this weekend for the football camp. Peacock has a great relationship with UofL RB coach Kolby Smith. Officially, Peacock has Louisville listed in his top 4 but my take is that Louisville is in the driver’s seat for this big bruising back.

Jalen Holston: A different type of back than Peacock, Holston is a lightning fast running back that can get downfield in a hurry. The staff is really high on Holston and has been encouraging him to commit. While he has not visited Louisville yet, Holston is trying to work out a date to be able to check out the school. Like Peacock, I think Louisville is in the lead at this time for Holston. Could he commit when on a visit? I don’t think that idea is too far fetched.

Makel Young: Louisville has been in contact recently with Young trying to get a visit set up. Right now Young lists Louisville and USF as his favorites (although he has only visited USF) and said one could become a leader after visiting Louisville.

** DE/DT Antwan Owens visited Louisville this weekend as well for the camp and said he had a “great” visit. Owens came away saying that Louisville is “definitely in my top 5”. While they haven’t offered the 3* defensive lineman, I wouldn’t be surprised if an offer is on its way shortly. The coaches at the camp said they see him as a very athletic defensive tackle (quick for his size, good mobility, and can run/move really well). Owens is being recruited hardest by Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, NC State, and Memphis currently.

** One local name to keep an eye on in the class of 2018: Zach Rodgers of Floyd Central High School. Rodgers has spent time at outside linebacker up to this point but has just transitioned to running back, which he showcased at Louisville’s camp this weekend. Another recruit singled him out as one of the best running backs on either day of the camp. Considering he is new to the position and still has 2 years left before college, we will keep an eye on this one. To top it off, Rodgers said that out of the schools recruiting him now (Stetson, USF, and UK) Louisville stands out to him. While he does not have an offer yet, it sounds as though that may change as they invited him to a game this season and want him to take a visit.

** And in case you missed the recent commitments, here are the articles on OL Joey Palmer, S Rodney Owens, and TE Kemari Averett.
