Maybe the New York Jets just love Louisville Cardinals? With three former Louisville Cardinals on their roster in Running Back Bilal Powell, Defensive Back Johnny Patrick, and the recently acquired Super Bowl Champion Breno Giacomini the Jets decided to go with another Louisville Cardinal. This time, Safety Calvin Pryor with the 18th overall selection. The New York Jets met with Pryor but it was thought by many that he would be taken a few picks earlier by the Chicago Bears.

“He’s a bigger Bob Sanders. I thought he was the best safety on the board,” Mike Mayock of NFL.com said of Pryor.

Pryor goes to a team that has been built to be great defensively. It’s Rex Ryan’s calling card. Pryor fits the mold perfect because he is quick and physical enough to put up production in a man-to-man style type of defense.

I like this position for Pryor. The Jets are still searching for a lock-down safety that can create turnovers and serve as a guy that you don’t want to throw to the middle on. Honestly they haven’t had that since another Louisville Cardinal played there in Kerry Rhodes. He had three interceptions in 2013 for Louisville and he’ll be put in a position to make more happen now in the NFL.

In all of the possible destinations that Pryor could have landed, I’d say this is the second best spot behind the Chicago Bears. Only because I believed he’d be a day one starter there. He’ll have to work a little harder in New York but it’s certainly still a possibility.  The Jets are gonna have to replace 32-year old Dawan Landry sooner or later. Pryor probably presents more competition than Landry could ever want.
