University of Louisville junior safety Gerod Holliman was named one of the five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America announced on Thursday.

The four others finalists are Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown, Alabama defensive back Landon Collins, Ole Miss defensive back Senquez Golson, and Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s top NCAA defensive football player, will be awarded during the annual Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet presented by ACN scheduled for Monday, December 8th at The Westin Hotel in Charlotte.

Holliman has had a remarkable season in leading the Louisville defense to atop of the national rankings and a 7-3 record heading into this weekend’s game at Notre Dame. He looks to become the second winner of this award, as former defensive end Elvis Dumervil won accolades in 2005.

A product of Miami, Fla., Holliman leads the nation in interceptions with 13, already tying the ACC record for interceptions in a season. He also needs one more interception to tie the 46-year NCAA record held by Al Worley of Washington, who tallied 14 picks in 1968.

“Gerod has had a remarkable season,” head coach Bobby Petrino said. “He has shown an ability to read routes and make plays on the football. It’s a tribute to his understanding of the game and working within the framework of the defense. He’s been exciting to watch this season.”

Holliman, who broke Anthony’s Floyd’s school record on 10 set back in 2000, recorded a career-high three interceptions in the win over Boston College on Nov. 8. It marked the fourth time this season that Holliman registered multiple interceptions in a game and the eighth time this season that he recorded an interception in a game.

The Cardinals lead the nation with 22 interceptions this season.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s top NCAA defensive football player, will be awarded during the annual Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet presented by ACN scheduled for Monday, December 8th at The Westin Hotel in Charlotte.

The keynote address for the banquet will be given by University of Alabama Head Football Coach, Nick Saban. University of Maryland legend, Randy White, will receive this year’s Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by Florida East Coast Railway.

“The 2014 Bronko Nagurski award finalists have distinguished themselves as outstanding players and team leaders throughout this football season,” commented John Rocco,Executive Director of the Charlotte Touchdown Club. “Each of these young men is truly deserving of this honor and the winner, like football legend Bronko Nagurski, will be recognized as one of the all-time greats of college football.”
