Anthony Floyd To Have Jersey Honored Saturday vs. Boston College

The all-time leader in interceptions at the University of Louisville, All-American safety Anthony Floyd will have his No. 24 jersey honored at the Boston College game on Saturday afternoon at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

It will be the 22nd jersey to be celebrated in the 99-year history of the program.

The Youngstown, Ohio, native, Floyd played for the Cardinals from 1999-02 and led the Cardinals to four-consecutive bowl appearances. He holds the school record and is currently tied for the Conference USA mark with 18 interceptions. He finished his illustrious career 271 tackles and 33 pass break-ups in three years as the starting safety.

A two-time Conference USA first-team defensive back (2000-01), Floyd was considered one of the top defensive backs in the nation, assisting the Cardinals in winning a pair of Conference USA championships in 2000 and 2001.

In 2000, Floyd guided the Cardinals to their first C-USA title and a trip to the Liberty Bowl. He tied for the national lead in interceptions with 10 and 17 pass break-ups – the second-most in school history. He set a league single-game record with three interceptions – returning one for a touchdown – in an upset of No. 11 Southern Mississippi.

Led by Floyd that season, the Cardinals’ defense topped all FBS programs with 27 interceptions, while also finishing fourth in the nation against the run. For his individual efforts, Floyd was named a Walter Camp first-team All-American, while garnering first-team all-conference accolades.

Louisville won its second-consecutive C-USA title in 2001, when Floyd registered 97 tackles and four interceptions. He paced the defensive unit that helped the Cardinals post an 11-2 record, which included a win over No. 18 BYU in the Liberty Bowl.

As a senior, Floyd was credited with a career-best 98 tackles and 4.0 sacks. He totaled 10 or more tackles in five games, including a season-high 12 in games versus TCU and Houston.

After his successful collegiate career, the Indianapolis Colts picked up Floyd as an undrafted free agent. He played two seasons in the league and totaled 56 tackles.

He spent the 2006 season with NFL Europe playing with the Berlin Thunder, where he earned All-NFL Europe honors after making four interceptions, which was tied for second in the league. He spent the 2006 NFL preseason with the Houston Texans before being released at the conclusion of training camp.

A graduate of Chaney High, Floyd was a two-time all-state performer and was voted the Division II co-Defensive Player of the Year after registering 96 tackles and four interceptions during his senior season.
